Three Afghan nationals have been imprisoned for their roles in the rape of a seventeen-year-old girl in Bristol, marking the conclusion of a case that involved cross-border flight and international police cooperation. The convictions follow a trial at Bristol Crown Court where evidence detailed how the victims were groomed online before being transported to a residence in St Werburghs for sexual assault.
Mehrab Safi, aged twenty-one, received the longest sentence of fifteen years. His accomplices, Awal Ahmadzai and Salman Habibkheli, both nineteen, were each sentenced to nine years in youth detention centers. A fourth defendant, a seventeen-year-old boy who also holds Afghan nationality but did not attempt to flee the United Kingdom, was sentenced to two years and seven months in a youth facility.
The sequence of events began during a Christmas shopping trip in November 2025 when the victim met Safi at Cabot Circus. According to police testimony, Safi initiated contact via Snapchat, engaging in a grooming process that included persuading the teenager to send explicit images. He subsequently arranged for a taxi to transport her from her home in Somerset to his property in Bristol.
Upon arrival at the house, the victim was given alcohol and subjected to sexual violence over several hours by Safi and the three other defendants. The assault occurred on the early morning of November 30, following days of digital interaction that investigators described as establishing a significant power imbalance between the adult perpetrator and the vulnerable minor.
Following the crime, law enforcement officers arrived at the property after the victim's mother reported her missing. While the teenage defendant was arrested at the scene, Safi, Ahmadzai, and Habibkheli evaded capture. The trio traveled to Birmingham and London before attempting to exit the country without proper documentation.
The suspects managed to conceal themselves in the back of a lorry bound for France. French authorities discovered them in Calais and facilitated their immediate return to British soil, where they were arrested on suspicion of rape. Mobile phone footage recovered from Safi’s device showed the men laughing inside the truck, which prosecutors argued indicated a belief that they had successfully escaped accountability.
During sentencing, Judge Michael Cullum emphasized the profound impact of the crimes on the survivor. He noted that the grooming tactics exploited the victim's vulnerability and that the subsequent trafficking and rape would cause unimaginable distress. The court heard that the attacks fundamentally altered the teenager's life trajectory.
In a victim impact statement read aloud, the survivor described feeling traumatized and fearful of leaving her home. She reported experiencing panic when considering going out alone and noted that she now requires the presence of her mother or best friend for any outings. The statement highlighted ongoing emotional struggles, including intrusive dreams and periods where suppressed memories resurface.
Detective Sergeant Jo Babbage of Avon and Somerset Police praised the victim's bravery throughout the investigation. She expressed concern over the predatory nature of the grooming, noting how a routine shopping trip turned into a terrifying ordeal. The successful apprehension of the fugitives relied on fortuitous timing and cooperation with French law enforcement agencies.
The case underscores the challenges posed by digital grooming and cross-border flight in modern criminal investigations. While the perpetrators have been held accountable through the justice system, the long-term psychological effects on the survivor remain a central concern for authorities and support organizations alike.
